How do I install the software?

1) Download GENESIS.ZIP

2) Unzip the file GENESIS.ZIP.
    This will decompress the file into the installation files

3) Run SETUP.EXE

Upon completion of this installation, you will find a shortcut to FIS Genesis placed in your Start/Programs launch folder. Alternatively you can run GEN32.EXE from Explorer or Program Manager.

Note:- You can use most decompression programs, such as winzip, to unzip the compressed file. You can download a free evaluation version of winzip from http://www.winzip.com

For further information refer to the README.TXT file found after unzipping the compressed (ZIP) file

Do you provide the data?

We do not provide the data. Genesis can chart any data as long as you can provide the data in one of the various formats that Genesis supports. Please refer to the Genesis help file under Data Sources for further information.

Please refer to the Genesis help file under Data Sources=>Free Data Source for further information.

How do I select a charting model / tool?

The user must first connect to the data source of interest by selecting from the Genesis menu item Connection.. If the connection is successful the system will display a price graph. Then to select a charting tool generally involves:-

1) Select the graph containing the instrument of interest by clicking the left mouse button inside the chart.
2) Select the required charting tool from the Genesis menu, PcrTools, VolTools or ProTools

To select a comparison chart such as correlation, historical correlation, overlay, spread, relative strength, relative performance or price ratio tool requires the user to follow the above steps and then to select another graph containing the second instrument of interest by again clicking the left mouse button inside the second chart.

How do I connect and chart real-time data?

You have to contact your data supplier and find out the Source, Topic and Item for your DDE data source. Then select the menu item DDE Source from the Genesis menu item Connection.

To link directly to Genesis your data feed must support the standard Microsoft DDE mechanism. We have found that some data suppliers do not allow 3rd party software, except for Excel, to connect DIRECTLY to their data via DDE. For Reuters we had to implement a special workaround.

You can definitely connect Genesis to your data feed via Excel.

Please refer to the Genesis help file under Data Sources for further information.

How do I connect and chart real-time tick data?

To connect Tick by Tick real-time data you need TWO data values. One is the price and the other is the time.

To link directly to Genesis your data feed must support the standard Microsoft DDE mechanism. We have found that some data suppliers do not allow 3rd party software, except for Excel, to connect DIRECTLY to their data via DDE. You can definitely connect Genesis to your data feed via Excel.

Assuming your Tick by Tick real-time data is going into the spreadsheet GBP_CHF.xls (Click here to download GBP_CHF.xls)
you can chart the data in Genesis by:-

1) Open the spreadsheet GBP_CHF.xls

    R3C3 (the cell location of the time)
    R3C4 (the cell location of the price)

2) Select the menu item DDE Source from the Genesis menu item Connection.
    Set:-
    Source = Excel
    Topic = [GBP_CHF.xls]sheet1
    Item = R3C3:R3C4

3) With Fullquote disabled and Tick by Tick enabled, press the OK button and the chart will come up.

The chart will then update for each price update. You can see this by changing the time and price values in GBP_CHF.xls

Does Genesis automatically update charts for non real-time data?

Yes. Users can specify the update fetch frequency for non real-time data sources, such as from the Internet/Intranet, databases or text files, by selecting the menu item Options => Data => Fetch Frequency. Genesis will then re-fetch the data for such datasources and update the charts at these intervals.

Can I chart consolidated data from different data sources?

Yes. Simply consolidate the data into one of the repositories that Genesis supports, such as text file, database or Excel before charting. Please refer to the Genesis help file under Data Sources for further information.

Can I chart other (non-financial) data?

You can use Genesis to chart other data. All you have to do is to make sure your data fits one of the various data formats that Genesis supports. Please refer to the Genesis help file under Data Sources for further information.

As an example using the "Date, Price" format you can have anything in the Price field, such as mortgage rates, sales figures or whatever.

If you want to use more data fields then you can use the DOHLC format and replace the fields with your data fields making sure that your first field is a date.

How can I change the parameters such as time periods for models?

Genesis is fully customisable.

Double click the left mouse button inside any chart. A selection area, represented by an ellipse, at the start of each line will be displayed. Select the line by moving the mouse over the selection area and clicking & releasing the left mouse button. A popup a menu will be shown allowing the user to change the time period, colours, etc;

Please refer to the Genesis help file under Graph Editing Mode for further information.

How do I scroll a chart or see all the data?

Zoom in/out of data is achieved by selecting Resolution from the Graph Pop-up menu, which is obtained by clicking the right mouse button inside the graph. This will allow you to view the whole data or select data.

Please refer to the Genesis help file under Graph Popup Menu for further information.

Error message missing OBDC32.DLL

This is a common problem for win95 users who do not have MS-Access, or Microsoft Visual Basic.

odbc32.dll is a database connectivity DLL which Microsoft mistakenly did not supply with their standard win95 operating system. Microsoft, say, they have corrected this missing DLL in later operating system releases.

You may also need odbcint.dll and odbcjt32.dll since odbc32.dll uses these DLLs. These are all Microsoft DLLs and you should ask Microsoft where to download them from. Make sure you get the correct versions for your operating system.

Why cannot I access Genesis Help feature?

On a computer that is running Windows 8, Windows 7 or Windows Vista, you may be unable to use the Genesis Help feature because these platforms do not include the Windows Help program (WinHlp32.exe) automatically. To install this component please visit Microsoft Help and Support

Does Genesis support the Mac?

Genesis currently only supports the Windows platform. However Mac users can still use Genesis if they have Windows running on the Mac using Parallels or Boot Camp.
